Episode 72: Marion Manley

Marion Isadore Manley was born in Junction City, Kansas on April 29, 1893. Her parents were school teachers Charles Haines and her mother Marion Isadore Jones Manley. Her father would quit teaching and go into banking; while her mother would quit teaching after she gave birth to her nine children, Marion was the youngest. Marion would attend the University of Kansas for 3 years before transferring to the School of Engineering at the University of Illinois where she would graduate in 1917. She would be the only woman in her class. Out of the 264 ladies that attended that entire school she would be 1 of 14 elected to Phi Delta Psi - their women’s honor society. After graduating, Marion would work in Philadephia designing warships before moving to a bustling Miami, Florida. On September 6th, 1918 - she received her architecture license - making her the first woman to practice in Miami and would become the third in the state of Florida.

Along with designing the beautiful University of Miami campus, Marion would design several residences in the Coral Gables neighborhood of Miami. She is credited for contributing to the aesthetic that is Coral Gables aka Spanish, Mediterranean-style homes that see all over that neighborhood. Marion would design houses and buildings using local materials, and she was cognizant of not disturbing the surrounding areas.

In 1956 Marion would be recognized as a Fellow of the AIA, making her the first in Miami and the fifth architect in South Florida. On February 18, 1984, Marion would pass away.
